Beacon Villages Journal

I know that this is a village community site but it is also a personal site too. As such, I make no apology for this issue being dominated , for me, by the loss of a wonderful horse.

Tregony had been with us for five and a half years. That is not a long time compared with many owners who have had their horses from foals. But, to us, those five years were a lifetime. He came to us, already an old horse, on his retirement from a riding school, not as a sanctuary charity case but as a companion for our other horse Alezane.

The moment they set eyes on each other, it was love at first site and they instantly set about what can only be described as 'synchronized grazing' followed by bouts of mutual grooming which continued over the next five years.

To all owners, their horses are special and I do not doubt that Tregony was no better or worse than most. But to us, he was wonderful. He did not have a bad bone in his body and would go out of his way to avoid trouble, never biting or kicking anyone or anything. The worst thing he ever did was to sulk if you gave him a wormer paste and his eyes would reprove you for at least two days.

In the end, it was his age (35 as far as anyone could tell) and his legs that let him down. He would often lay down but the last time, he just couldn't get up again.

Our loss and our problem, not yours, but it does mean that I have not felt able to go out and take photos this month. I will do the best that I can with what comes in.

I am grateful for those people who provide both copy and photographs for the site. This month we have had some wonderful shots of the Sticklepath Music Hall by Stephen Whitehead, who I have never met, submitted through David Watkins, who also has again provided some really good photographs.

I am grateful too, to Ursula Radford who, in addition to providing her own page, lent me a wonderful scrapbook of newspaper cuttings from 1886 to 1904 kept in an exercise book by Beatie Neil of (she writes) Belstone Mine, nr Okehampton, Devonshire, England, British Isles, Europe, Hemisphere, World. Who needs postcodes?
