Beacon Villages Journal
Comment

A month for changes. As usual, I got the feeling that it will not all get done in time. Then I thought, 'who cares?' Not in a nasty way but just wondering which pages people look at and which they don't because maybe I am putting a lot of effort into things that are not required.

I therefore went to the site stats in some depth, not just the page that I publish here but to those parts which tell of the most (and least) popular pages. This tended to confirm a feeling I had been getting, that the bulk of the site's visitors come for the photos.

The next most popular pages are the four main villages pages and, only then, sometimes, the monthly Journal village reports. The rest hardly figure at all (which makes me wonder why I am writing this - few will read it!)

One of the pages to be cut is the "Do You Recognise ...?" item. I had fun making them but it was obvious from the numbers voting that very few people looked at it.

Another page that will be cut out is the "Doreen's Fun Page". When it started, there were few items like that. Now, I (and probably you, as well) get almost daily emails containing similar jokes, stories and pictures. I am making one exception. Doreen sent me some nice animal pictures so I am putting these on "Doreen's Last Page".

However, there are also some additions. The inclusion of the link to the BBC News (Local, National and Radio) on the front page, I hope will be helpful to both our home and overseas visitors.

In addition, I often suspect that people don't even find the Journal so there will now be a news ticker link on the front page. The Journal Content page now has a "This Day in History" and a "Word Match" section. All I hope is that, when people follow the links, they remember to come back by using the green arrow at the top left of their browser.

Finally some good news. More local people are contributing articles and photographs. The site is intended to act as a community forum and showcase and the more you are involved, the better it will become.
