Wishing you all a very happy
and peaceful New Year.

It feels funny writing this on 20th December but I have had to make a special effort to get as much of the site completed as possible before our company comes on 23rd. As they will be with us until 30th, I want to be free to be sociable and join in all the Xmas festivities and games. Don't get too excited, that usually means Scrabble and the dreaded Xmas TV.

Somehow I feel the world is going on without

me this month. There must be many carol concerts, coffee mornings, charity events etc. that I am just not getting to. Life seems to be full of other things that are clamouring for my attention. And yet, someone must be going to them for they are always raising lots of money for any amount of good causes. The nearest I have been able to get, is to give to the mobile santa, driving about the village and knocking on the door.

When I was involved in charity fund raising and trying to get donations from big firms, I learned

that the only real way to get people to give to charity was on a face to face basis. OK, some people will be roused to pledge a sum over the phone or internet for a TV spectacular like Children in Need. But very few will refuse a face to face request at their doorstep.

Let us hope there is no urgent need (no tsunami, no earthquake, etc.) in 2006 to require our donation. We can then decide our own charitable priorities and give to them.
