Belstone Cricket Club 's season has divided into two halves so far. Until the start of June nine matches had been played and eight wins recorded. Skipper Richard Drake scored the fastest century in the club's history, taking just 65 balls to knock up 120 runs against Cheriton Fitzpaine. Then came a very close South Devon League Division One game against Roborough which was lost off the last ball of the 40 overs even though Belstone had scored their ninth highest total ever, 224 for seven wickets. After that disappointment Belstone have lost another five games in June, leaving them with just one win out of five games played in the League.

Lots more cricket to come in July and August - new players are always welcome. Come along to nets on a Friday evening from 6pm .

Out and about in June

The Transit of Venus on 8 June was seen to good effect at Belstone thanks to a large telescope which was set up in the village car park.

Turn-out in the European elections on 10 June was well above the national average in Belstone parish - about 70% of the eligible parishioners voted.

After an extreme dry spell the fourth week in June brought what weathermen described as 'the deepest June depression for 150 years'. The resulting wind and rain brought down some side branches and blew over the cricket club sightscreen but was probably welcomed by many young birds and gardeners.

Diary Dates for July

The summer season of Cream Teas in Belstone Village Hall begins on Sunday 4 July between 2.30pm and 5.30pm . What better way to finish (or start) your walk, than with a speciality 'Belstone Cream Tea' ? - tea or coffee, two scones, jam and clotted cream for £3. Home made cakes also available.

Paintings by local artists will be on display (and for sale) in the Hall. Just park in the car park and pop across the lane into the Hall
.

The Cream Teas continue on every Sunday (except 11 July) in the Hall until 5 September.

Belstone Village Fair takes place on the green from 2pm on Sunday 11 July. All the fun of a traditional village fair with a fantastic Moorland backdrop. Enter the Cosdon Run, try your hand at the crockery smash and skittles, enjoy the bouncy castle, listen to the Okehampton Band and watch Maypole Dancing, learn about the Devon Wildlife Trust and the National Park from their displays, fill up on tea and cakes ... and much more besides.

The Thursday morning café continues in the Hall all this month as usual, as does the new Belstone Art Group, which meets in the Hall every Tuesday morning - new faces always welcome.

Your last chance this year to visit the gardens at Andrews Corner on Skaigh Lane comes on Friday and Saturday 23 and 24 July. After another successful series of Sunday afternoon openings in May and June these two are evening events between 7pm and 10pm . Hundreds of lanterns will be lit to illuminate hidden corners and pathways, creating a magical effect as twilight merges into darkness. Admission is £3 (under the National Gardens Scheme) and wine will be served.
