Dartmoor is the land of granite. It was before the ancient stone men, who have left their menhirs and stone circles and other enigmas for future generations. It still was when the tinners came to seek their fortune, when the farmers came to build their walls and when the developers came to build their roads and railways. It gave to men's cities to build their bridges, monuments and towns and it still is, for pleasure seekers - children playing, ramblers and rock climbers - to discover. And yet, it is not all granite, for the rock has captured the weather and built pools, rivers, streams and wildlife habitats. |
