South Tawton Parish

South Tawton Parish is one of the biggest in Parishes in Devon. South Tawton and South Zeal villages and the hamlets around them, that have been absorbed by them, account for just under a quarter of its size and Cosdon Beacon and its surrounding commons and moorland account for another quarter. The remaining half consists of lush farmland populated sparsely by hamlets and bartons and the one other sizeable village, Whiddon Down, which is the first part of the Parish you meet when coming of the A30.

The Road to North Tawton

Going roughly on a circular tour from South Tawton, you first come to Taw Green, then up past North Wyke Institute of Grassland and Environmental Research you come to Taw Mill. From here, you go out of the Parish into North Tawton and double back in again at the site of the Roman Road, just South of the railway line, at Cocktree Moor. If you follow the road straight down to Whiddon Down, you will miss the hamlets of Itton, Ham Farm, Sessland, Cullaford to your left and Great Cocktree to your right. Turning right at the Post Inn at Whiddon Down towards South Zeal, after a while turn left at Fire Stone Cross, which will lead you to Gooseford, East Ash, East Week and West Week before returning to South Zeal along the Throwleigh Road. The pictures below are some of the sights you will see!
