Making Websites is Easy - Part 3

If you have got this far, you will now have designed, constructed and browser tested
your first simple website.

All that remains now is to set up Nvu with the details of your hosting site and then to upload your files to the server.

Before you start, you will need:

1. The website address that your site will be hosted on. If you bought your domain name it is that - but if you are using the free hosting space from your ISP then you will be told it.
2. The host publishing FTP address
Told by the web hosting source.
3. Your User Name.
Told by the web hosting source.
4. Your Password.
Told by the web hosting source.

Each ISP or Web Host will work slightly differently but you will need to get this information from them.
As an example, your website address might be = http://myweb.ispname.co.uk/your_website_name
your FTP address = ftp.myweb.ispname.co.uk
your User Name = yourname@ispname.co.uk
your password = givenword

The best way to get this information is by phone or email unless your Provider's help/FAQ service is better than most!
Whichever way, get it in written format so you can be sure you dont make a mistake writing it down.

With the above information in front of you - Open Nvu and choose :

Edit/Publish Site Settings
New Site (for the first time only when the site is not already set up)

Then enter :
Your Site Name (Non technical - just so you know which site it is e.g. my first, etc.)
HTTP Address - The website address you obtained above
Publishing Address - The FTP address you obtained above
User Name - The user name/ID that you obtained above
Password - that you obtained above
and then tick "save password"

You are now set up to upload your site to the host server. Open each file in turn until all your pages have been uploaded.

Open file/Choose file - click
File/Publish - click

Now check the site name is the one you want to use (if you have more than one site- if it is not choose the correct site)
Check for or choose the - Page Title (If empty, enter your title) and the File Name.
Site Subdirectory. Some ISPs enter your site in a named folder - if so enter it here - else ignore
Include Images and Other Files - choose yes
Use This Site Sub directory - locate and use "images" folder

And finally - Publish

If your information is correct and you have entered it properly, you should now be able to enter your website address in your browser and admire your first internet website. If all is well, get your friends and family to have a look and offer 'helpful' comment. If it has not worked, as long as you are a fairly patient person, you are well on the way to learning a great deal as you go back over each step and check to find which mistake(s) you have made.

Often it is just typing a comma instead of a dot or transposing two characters in a word. All good website makers have been there and have persevered until they solve the problem. This is just a first step, there is much more to learn. You can pick up a lot from the various magazines around. Good luck and, most of all, have fun!
