More parking problems
South Zeal is a village that has long experienced car parking problems, during term time with inconsiderate drivers parking dangerously and blocking the road while taking children to school and similar behaviour from drivers during events taking place in the village. No parking notices are continually ignored by divers who also park at cross road and lane junctions and seem not to notice that as they do so they obscure the view of other drivers of oncoming traffic as they try to navigate a cross roads or lane junction. A new hazard has now been added for drivers’ approaching the Ramsley lane junction since drivers have taken to park vehicles at right angles to the pavement instead of alongside it. It is said that a traffic warden or inspector has approved the system where cars jut out into what has previously been a moderately safe area of road but villagers consider that if this has happened the inspection could not have taken place on this east-west road area during the morning or afternoon when bright sunlight can suddenly be faced by drivers. Near accidents have already been experienced by those driving into the village towards the west when they are not only confronted by bright sunlight but by sunlight that is increased by being reflected off parked cars jutting out into the road.  Blinded by the light drivers are unaware of oncoming vehicles which, at any speed, present a dangerous hazard to drivers. Pedestrians crossing the road in similar circumstances may not even be seen by a driver affected by the unexpected glare. The Parish Council has been asked to reconsider the situation that has been created by the parking changes.

Update 1st October

Just a point of interest on this piece.

The Parish Council never considered or endorsed the parallel parking in the first place and infact only discussed it on 25th Sept, where we asked that the practice be stopped with immediate effect, which happened the next day.

Christmas treat
The Friends of South Tawton County Primary School organisers have decided to add a breath of fresh air to their Christmas fundraiser in aid of the school and we've managed to 'pull out of the hat' a special Christmas treat. For your very own family entertainment our very own amazing local magician, the widely acclaimed Chris James (AKA Chris Acton) will be hosting a Fantabulous Family Magic Show at the Victory Hall on Sunday 26th November. It is a date for everyone to put in their diaries and watch out for the day tickets go on sale. They’re likely to disappear quickly, just like magic.

Keep safe
South Tawton County Primary School, with safety in mind is asking parents to please collect their children promptly after school-club activities end. If for any reason parents are to be likely to be late they are asked to, please inform the school. All children will be taken to the library to wait for parents to collect to ensure their safety; they will only be allowed to walk home alone if a letter from a parent has been received.

Green village needed
The westden charity that has had great success in rural areas with its provision of motorcycles scheme to ‘get people to work’ and its development of rural skills projects is seeking volunteer villages to participate in its ‘Green Village’ project.
To those that would undoubtedly state that they consider themselves lucky to live in a village project organisers pose the question, “with growing concerns about climate change and other kinds of environmental damage, do you think the people in your village will feel so lucky in the future?” as they look for a special village to take part in an exciting project. During the project they would like to look at the way people live and how their lives affect the environment around them. Do they support local shops, farms and businesses? Do they need to use their cars as much as they do now? How well are their houses insulated? Do they recycle? Do people get enough exercise? By looking at these and other things and then suggesting some simple changes to be implemented, the village could be an even better place to live - now and in the future. If volunteers put their village forward for the "Green Village" project, the intention of the scheme is to help people to make choices - not imposing them.
Those that would like their village to be the one to take part in this project or need further information should contact oz@westden.co.uk or phone Oz on 0845 345 5077.
