Perusing the past with pleasure
Many of the visitors to the historic Church House in South Tawton over the bank holiday weekend found more there than they had expected. A veritable menu of parish history awaited them offering a taste of the past from the copies and interpretations of Churchwarden accounts from the sixteenth century and onwards, photo’s that spanned a century and more and plans or maps that revealed the origins of the present make-up of the area.  People perusing old photos of young schoolchildren or youthful activities and village events laughed out land when finding themselves, parents, relations or friends captured by the camera. Thanks to the work of area archivist Meg Wolton and the local history group the parish possesses a fine collection of material some of which, thanks also to their work in staging it, was provided the content of the exhibition that was enjoyed by visitors from near and far. Demonstrating the added value of the building for other community events was the provision of refreshments and cream teas by volunteers with a menu that delighted and satisfied those with a taste for good food. Information on the potential use and date availability of the building can be gained by event organisers calling 01837 840418 or visiting the website www.churchhouse.org.uk.

Can what we do interest  you?
The 'Know Your Village' evening organised by Cheriton Bishop Village Hall Committee takes place in the hall on Saturday, September 9th from 7.00 – 9.30p.m. The event provides village organisations with the opportunity to stage a display to show what they are doing and what they have to offer. This means of introduction during a getting to know you evening is hoped to be a really good way for local people to really get to know what's going on in the village and, if it goes well it could be a regular event. Committee members have be getting in touch with all the organisations they can think of in the village, but if there are any other groups or individuals hiding their light that would like to participate in the event, there may still be time if they contact Nina Inglis on 01647 24812, or any hall  committee member.
