Let's clear up one thing, right now. In 1490, an 'Ale' was the name for a party. Not just any old party. It was a party to raise funds for the Parish, to spend on what the parish thought important, in those days, the decoration of the church of Saint Andrew and to support the poor of the parish. In 1490, there was no Welfare State, no-one but the residents to look after each other, no Council or Government to blame, just us to look after us.
On 29th May 2006, we are having such a party. As a result of having the South Tawton Church House restored, we now find that the Parish of South Tawton has a major Heritage Site on its hands, whether it wanted it or not. To celebrate (and also to try and raise some cash for the conservation of the site), we are trying to revive the medieval tradition and have a party on May 29th this year. In 1490, the major festival would have been at Whitsun. As, this year, we find that another event has been booked, we are having our party on the Spring Bank Holiday Monday instead.
Let everyone be notified, next year the 'Ale' will be at Whitsun.!
There were two most important days in the social calendar in 1490 - Whitsun and the church's saint's day, Saint Andrew, 30th November. There would have been 'Ales' (parties) on both these days and also on other days such as weddings (Bride Ales - bridal), Guild days (masons, carpenters, etc.) and, really, any other excuse for a party. Had it been now, there would have been a 'World Cup Ale'.
On 29th May 2006, you are all invited to the party. This is the first attempt to revive the 516 year old tradition. we are hoping that this will grow to become as famous as the Widdecombe Fair or the Padstow Mayday 'obby 'oss celebrations. It can, with your support. For a first year, we are feeling our way. Lots of people are working very hard to make this year a success. In particular, Shirley Denford is co-ordinating many groups and entertainers and, if you want to be involved, it's not too late to contact her. It will be quite something to be able to claim that 'I was in at the beginning' of this potential national event.
For you, the general public, yes, the main aim is to raise money for the conservation and improvement of South Tawton's major Heritage Site. But equally, the aim is to revive the medieval tradition of the members of the Parish having a great time together. If you have no money to spend, come along in the afternoon and bring the kids. have a great time with the animals, the minstrels, the competitions and the dressing up. If you want to enjoy an adult time, come in the evening for a medieval supper and some Church House Ale.
The main thing to take on board is that you will not be doing anyone a favour. It is not you giving to Church House. It is you, as a member of the community, enjoying your heritage in that community. If, while having fun, you want to support your friends, neighbours and colleagues, then that will be up to you. It is your Heritage to destroy or enjoy!
