Rectory Ramblings
May arrives and as summer looms we come again to the fund raising time of the year and I would like to use my page this month to advertise the Parish of South Tawton’s four main events for 2006.
At 7.30pm on Friday May 19th at St Andrew’s we kick off with a concert THE GASMAN COMETH, a celebration of the music of Flanders and Swann. Our artists for the evening are Roger and Christine Cleverdon who both studied at the Guild Hall School of Music in London. Roger was a chorister at Exeter Cathedral before singing as a Lay Vicar at Westminster Abbey from 1965 to 2002 combining this, with freelance singing, piano and organ playing. Roger worked with Donald Swann from 1971 to 1992 in two shows, “Between the Bars” and “A Crack In Time” Roger has sung with the Two Ronnies and was one of the original Lumberjacks in the famous Monty Python Sketch! Christine is an organist and pianist and has previously been a teacher in South London. Roger and Christine live in Hatherleigh, and although now enjoying retirement are both utilizing their musical gifts in our local churches. Please ring me asap on 849048 to reserve a ticket, price £5.
On June 24th in and around St Andrew’s we hold our annual summer event with all the usual fun of a traditional country fete. In Church House ploughman’s lunches will be served from noon, puddings will be in church. At 1pm in church Annabel our gifted local harpist will be giving a short recital. Country dancing follows at 2pm and the Junior Brass Band perform at 2.30pm. We hope there will be a display of Kite flying in the field next to the rectory at 3pm.
The South Tawton Flower Festival will be held on August 18th 19th and 20th, with an evening of “Bubble and Bits” on the Saturday which will include a short summer concert.
Please mark this date in your diary and come and see the special talent of our flower arrangement.
Having sung in the Royal Albert Hall, York Minster, The Royal Festival Hall and Kings College Cambridge, Louise Mott sings for us at St Andrew’s on September 15th Louise studied at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama and The Royal College of Music. She has sung with English National Opera, Welsh National Opera and Opera North. Louise made her Proms debut in Vaughan Williams’s Serenade to Music and her September concert will include music by Schuman and Braham’s.
PLEASE SUPPORT OUR CONCERTS AND EVENTS.
