Autumn Fair

The Autumn Fair in aid of church funds took place at Victory Hall on 5 th November. As always a stalwart band of volunteers worked on a wide range of stalls eager to sell their wares! The Chocolate and Sweetie Tombola was very popular, as people could hardly believe that every ticket meant a prize!! Rumour has it that David Youle took the longest coffee break of all the stall holders..well he knows everybody and likes to chat. I don't think there was any need for Michel Thayer to comment that more books were sold in David's absence than when he was at his stall!! David has a sense of humour and would give a wry smile if reading this! Michael Boother and his Junior Silver Band blew in and entertained the crowds while they enjoyed coffee and home baking or browsed the stalls. £720 was raised - thanks to all who contributed in any way.

South Zeal W.I.

The ladies of the W.I. joined with The Wives and Friends of Fairplace Church for a Christmas shopping trip to Homeleigh Garden Centre in Launceston. Shoppers bought everything from apple trees to Christmas crackers! As you will see from the photos Joan Curtis and Joyce Worthington really entered into the spirit of things. The evening was rounded off with soup, pasties, mince pies and coffee - delicious. Do have a look at the new programme of speakers for 2006. Visitors are very welcome. Only 50p for an enjoyable evening and a cup of tea!

Salt of the Earth

Michael and I went along to Victory Hall on 25 th November to support the Salt of the Earth fundraising evening organised by Dr. Tom Bell. We were treated to curry and wine while we watched film footage of Tom's coastal walk, which he is doing to help raise funds for the charity. Also Murray Frankland, Director of the charity, showed a very moving film on the Tsumani and how they were working with local people to try and build houses, develop small businesses and rebuild boats for the fishermen. During the evening there was an opportunity to buy gifts from the craft stalls. The crafts were made by local people in India who were paid fairly for their work. It was very heartening to hear that a significant portion of every pound donated goes directly to support those in need. Photos show Janet Elisita and Murray Frankland and Robin Tiley with Vera and Clifford White. Robin is normally the one taking photos so it was nice to take one of him for a change!

St. Mary's Church Belstone

I do not normally include items from Belstone but Chris Walpole was not available! Arthur Herbert, featured in the photo, made a lovely job of building two new oak notice boards for the church. He was standing by waiting for the glass to be delivered. This however did not stop those present drinking a toast to his work!

Church House re-opening

I popped up to see church house in all its refurbished glory on Wednesday. It looked wonderful. I know Pete has included photos elsewhere but I thought I'd add my own also. As one who plans to use if for Safari suppers I was thrilled to see the excellent refurbishment of the kitchen. I was also amazed to see that upon removing one of the old kitchen cupboards they exposed an old fireplace! Photo included. The young man photographed under the Heritage lottery sign is one of the trainee conservationists whom Michael regularly teased about a possible romance with the only female conservationist in the crew! 'We are just good friends' she told Michael! David Youle kindly loaned his family chest dated 1690 for 'set dressing'. If anyone out there has a similar item they would like to donate..! I had to dash off to work and missed the official opening and a chance to sample the Church house Ale! No doubt I will have another opportunity to do so.
