Rectory Ramblings     November 2005

As the old saying goes 'you wait an hour for a bus and three come all at once'. That is a little like our service on November 27th at 9:30 a.m. (NOTE THE TIME!). On that day we celebrate Advent Sunday, our Patronal Festival and also a baptism reunion, all these being special occasions and all three blending well together.

Advent, the four week period before Christmas, marks the beginning of the Christian year and is a time of fasting and reflection. The season is observed as a time of preparation for Christmas, which strictly only begins on Christmas Day. It is hard for any of us to wait until December 25th but if we control any early celebrations a little I have always believed we enjoy the special times more. In South Tawton our Patronal Festival concentrates our thoughts on St. Andrew who was Jesus's first disciple a man of vision who was looking for purpose in his life and found it in the Messiah, the carpenter's son from Nazareth. Andrew committed himself to Christ as we all do in our Baptism, with of course others making promises for us when we are young. Everyone who has been baptised in our Benefice is warmly invited to come to our Advent Service at St. Andrew's (9:30 a.m. NOTE THE TIME!) as we dedicate ourselves to God's service and remember his love for us all.

If you would like to sing in a Benefice Choir for our Christmas Carol Services please come to a practise on November 19th at 10 a.m. at St. Andrew Church, South Tawton. It would help if you could sing one of the harmony lines. Our Carol Services will be held on December 18th 3 p.m. South Tawton, 6:30 p.m. Belstone.

This year I would like us to enjoy the tradition of Posada in both parishes. This Mexican custom involves the crib figures of Mary and Joseph been given hospitality in different homes over the Advent period as we remember their journey to Bethlehem. The figures are brought back to our crib services on Christmas Eve and placed in our nativity stables. Families or individuals need to offer a place for Mary and Joseph to stay and the name of the contact person will be announced later. This year we will hold a crib service in St. Andrew church South Tawton on Christmas Eve at 3 p.m. and at Belstone at 5 p.m. All services for Christmas will be advertised next month. May I wish you all a very reflective Advent?

Michael
