Rectory Ramblings     October 2005

The Milk for September 12 th was delivered on September 11 th this year, an insignificant event in itself but one that many of us will remember for the rest of our lives. Barry The Milk had an important historic appointment on the 12 th ; he had a ticket for the Oval for the last day of the final ashes test of 2005, the day England WON BACK THE ASHES!

I remember watching Michael Parkinson interview the great cricket commentator John Arlott. Arlott spoke of cricket in a way that brought tears to the eyes of the listeners, even those with no interest in sport. Parkinson's final question on cricket was simple, 'Is it important?' John Arlott in his unforgettable Hampshire burr answered, 'Not at all, it's only a game'.

I believe that of course cricket is only a game, but the winning of the Ashes, and the victory of England 1966 World Cup (to which this year has been compared) does make a difference to people's lives if only for a short time and possibly not in a life changing way. The singing of Jerusalem gave many of us a feeling of national collectiveness, which of course is different from nationalism. Emotions were stretched and joy was tangible.

There are times in individual sporting events when competitors have to acquire a focused selfishness. There are also times in sport when winning at all costs has ruined the game. In the recent Ashes series I believe we have seen the best that sport can produce. Determined preparation and training, the careful planning of tactics, the moulding of individual gifts into a team unit, great courage and the acceptance of failure as well as success have all been evident along with wonderful sportsmanship. Our summer of cricket has been a joy to watch.

There has been no joy however in the images of suffering that have also filled our hearts and minds this summer. We have been reminded of the awesome power of nature with hurricane Katrina's devastation of New Orleans and the surrounding areas. In Northern Ireland renewed violence has made it clear that the Peace Process remains in it's infancy and in Iraq unrest continues. September 11th the day the milk was early was the fourth anniversary of the destruction of the Twin Towers in New York City . The Christian mystic Julian of Norwich said that one day that all things shall be well. Let us pray she was right and let us also be thankful that sometimes we are given glimpses of real joy, sometimes in the world of sport, that lift our hearts and balance even for a little while, that which can make us despair.
