Rectory Ramblings     September 2005

I once read that the most dangerous profession outside of the armed forces was deep sea fishing. We should remember that when we next sit down to a plate of fish and chips! Following closely behind was farming. We should remember that as we approach the season of Harvest Festival and pray for those who work upon the land. At our Harvest Festival service at South Tawton (9:30 September 25 th ) and later at our parish communion Belstone (11:15 a.m.) we will hear from a guest speaker about the work of the organisation 'Send a cow' (Livestock for Life) and our Harvest collection on that day will go towards providing practical help to farmers in Africa.

So many African farmers fight a losing battle with poverty. They have the ability and will to build better lives for themselves and their children, but they lack the resources. Livestock can make a huge difference to families struggling to escape grinding poverty. Milk, eggs or meat enable families to improve their diets and therefore their health. Selling the surplus brings in desperately needed income, to be spent on basic necessities such as salt or soap, health care and the costs of children's schooling. Eventually the extra income can even buy more land or livestock. 'Send a Cow' has provided livestock - cows, goats, pigs, poultry, bees - and fruit trees to thousands of Africa's poorest families and also run training in animal care and farming methods to make the most of their gift. Recipients of help are asked to pass on their animal's first female offspring, or a proportion of their first honey or fruit harvest to another poor family, who will do the same in their turn. In this way the gift continues to grow.

Please support this very worthwhile scheme by attending our harvest service when we give thanks for all that we enjoy. Private donations can be forwarded directly. Brochures available in church.
