Men of Morchard

The popular male voice choir, Men of Morchard, is appearing at the Victory Hall, South Zeal on Friday 9th September, at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £6 for adults and £4 for children but while numbers are limited they can be obtained in advance from The Stores, South Zeal, or by calling Elspeth Brint on 01837 82220.

Trafalgar celebrations

South Tawton Parish Council is marking the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar early, in the hope of a pleasant late summer afternoon on Saturday, 10 th September. The celebrations will commence at 12.30p.m in South Tawton with a Trafalgar Day Service in St Andrew's Church South Tawton followed by a procession of the congregation, parishioners and friends at 1.00p.m. to South Zeal. Recreation Ground. All those participating should please bring their own picnic; though a barbecue should be available for those who forget. The Parish Council will provide beer, wine, soft drinks etc, and should there be inclement weather the gathering will be held in the Victory Hall.

There will be music during the picnic lunch, which will be preceded by a presentation of 'The Temeraire' by members of the South Zeal Players.

Fireshow Disco

The ever popular, fund-raising, Sticklepath Fireshow disco that specialises in 60s/70s music is being staged in Sticklepath Village Hall on Saturday, 10th September starting at 8.00p.m. Guaranteed to satisfy more senses than Viagra, this promises to be an evening of real music for those prepared to groove the night away. There will be a bar available and tickets on the door will cost £3.50.

Terrific art trail

Local artists in West Devon are joined by others in the local authority areas of Teignbridge, Torbay and South Hams in this year's Nine Days of Art project that returns with its third arts and open studios trails that contain more eye appealing presentations than ever. Take to the road between September 10 th and 18 th and discover the world of artists who live and work in hidden valleys, moors and historic towns. Start out at the Salar Gallery in Hatherleigh and it is only a short distance to Okehampton, Sticklepath, Chagford and Cheriton Bishop with stops in each place where visitors can begin to enjoy a multitude of arts: painting, print-making, stoneware, photography, poetry, pottery, furniture, ceramics, mosaics and much more.

Go further afield and the journey through creative fields is boundless. Adding to the atmosphere is the ability to meet and buy from the artists and makers themselves. New and emerging names are exhibiting alongside internationally established artists and all will be welcoming visitors into their homes, studios, galleries, village halls, hotels, country houses and many other beautiful and unusual locations. Village treasure

A Walking Treasure Hunt is being staged, for all the family, in Belstone on Sunday 11 th with a starting time that can be anywhere between 2.00 - 3.00p.m, to suit families and friends. The Village Hall is the starting point and also where cream teas will be available all afternoon. Phone 01837 840498 for more information or just turn up, check in and start searching..

Coffee with child appeal

A Coffee Morning in aid of Save the Children is being held on Saturday, 10th September in the Methodist Chapel, Cheriton Bishop from 10.00a.m. to 12.00 noon. The charity's cards and goods will be for sale and Christmas 2005 catalogues available for visitors to take away or browse through while having coffee and something to eat. Visitors will also be able to see samples of all the catalogue cards and one of the stalls will have some cut-price goods available only at this event.

It will be possible to make purchases on the day and/or place orders, which it is anticipated will be available for collection at the annual Craft Fair on October 15 th that is also being staged in aid of Children In Need in Cheriton Bishop Village Hall. There is an open invitation to visitors to come along and chat over a cup of coffee and some yummy bakery and more information about this event or the Craft Fair can be obtained by calling 01647 281637or 0I647 24848.
