Congratulations once again to the School Chess Team. We did even better than at the Megafinal in Tiverton, coming second overall out of five schools and only losing to Chagford by 1 ½ points! Thanks to the parents who yet again provided transport. John Smart & Peter Brotherton

SPORTS REPORT

NETBALL

Both netball teams have had very successful seasons this year with the 'A' team winning a total of 10 matches and drawing just one. They scored a total of 107 goals with 36 scored against them. These results meant that they were well deserved league winners and the shield will be presented at the final year assembly.

12 girls played at various times for the 'B' team and they did very well, winning 5 games and only losing 3. Between them they scored 38 goals and had 22 scored against them and they finished the league in second place. Well done everyone.

A mixed Year 6 and Year 5 netball team played in the High 5 Netball Tournament at North Tawton in October. The team turned in an excellent performance winning 5 of their matches to finish in equal second place.

The Year 5 girls played in the High 5 Netball Festival at Okehampton College in June. All of the players were put into mixed teams with one player from each of the other schools. All of the girls played superbly and the day was enjoyed by all.

The Year 4 netball teams played a friendly away against Okehampton in March. It was a good learning experience and despite the rain, the girls played very well.

All of the teams have shown a great team spirit over the year and should be congratulated on both their attitude and behaviour. Well done everyone.

FOOTBALL

The season started with the North Tawton Tournament where the team just missed out on reaching the semi-finals after a change of rules. The 'A' team has had a very successful season, finishing in 2 nd place in the league, just 6 points behind Okehampton. The team has been made up of a mixture of Y5 & 6 boys and as well as the success on the sporting field, their sportsmanship has been impeccable.

The 'B' team has had another good season, finishing in 4 th place in the league, just 1 point behind Chagford, Okehampton were the overall winners.

CROSS COUNTRY

Despite a depleted team due to a flu virus, all the children who participated did extremely well, representing the school with great sportsmanship and determination. Special thanks must be made to the Y4 girls who 'made up' our team numbers on the day without any training and to Chris Osborne, a committed squad leader.

TAG RUGBY

This year we have run two clubs a week, one for the Y3 & Y4 and the second for the Y5 & Y6. The season started with our second South Tawton Tag Rugby Festival. We entered 3 teams but unfortunately lost out to the eventual winners, Okehampton, in the semi-final. The rest of the season was spent training for the South West Tag Rugby Festival held at Marjons in Plymouth . We took a team of Y6 children who all played exceptionally well. Despite this gallant effort and close results, we were unable to win any games. The children involved deserve great praise for the sportsmanship and teamwork they showed throughout the day. Well done to all who have attended and we look forward to a new season.

ATHLETICS

A new tournament was held this year at Northlew for pupils in Years 4,5 & 6. The teams were mixed with pupils from other schools and some of the fun races included the sack race and skipping race. All of the athletes from South Tawton performed well and put in 100% effort. Certificates were awarded to all with medals being presented to the winners and runners up.

The Inter Primary Schools Athletic Competition took place at Okehampton College on Tuesday 12 th July in glorious sunshine. Both teams from South Tawton performed superbly and we couldn't have asked for more. The commitment, effort, attitude and behaviour from all of the South Tawton athletes was outstanding. The 'A' team finished as well deserved runners up, only 7 points behind the winners, Okehampton. The 'B' team finished in a creditable 5 th place. South Tawton were one of only two schools who entered 2 teams. Whilst everyone scored valuable points for their team, there were some notable performances from the following:

The team was made up of a mixture of Y4,5 & 6 children. The team battled well but unfortunately finished 4 th in their heat. There were notable performances from:
