Belstone - South Tawton - South Zeal - Sticklepath Under Cosdon Beacon Dartmoor Devon UK
All in a Day's Work
On 7th February at Church House South Tawton, the scaffolding was erected, a deep trench sample of thatch was extracted, the hole was re thatched and the scaffolding taken down again.
Local builder Keith Redstone had his scaffolding already erected before I arrived after breakfast.
John Letts prepares his tools and instruments (including camera and voice recorder) before getting down to business.
The view on the roof is too good to miss the opportunity for a little sightseeing photography.
John starts to remove the thatch in layers, going down through the centuries.
The new thatching straw arrives for the repair when John has finished.
John records each layer, both on film and voice as his work progresses.
Malcolm Hayes now takes over and starts to repair the trench that John has left.
There is only one way that you would know that Malcolm has been and that is the colour and neatness of this part of the roof.
I had to leave before Malcolm had quite finished. While I was there, Keith's man arrived to remove the scaffolding and had to be asked to return a little later.
