Rectory Ramblings March 2005

For many years pain, violence and death have all been sanitized in art, in our cinemas and on our television screens. When brutality is more realistically portrayed, there is often popular condemnation. We prefer it seems, our heroes dying with one 'clean' shot, having just the time to give a final few words of encouragement and hope before 'peacefully' passing from this world.

As we approach Easter there is the temptation to ignore Good Friday or at least view it through eyes that have been conditioned by paintings, sculptures or cinema epics that portray the Crucification as almost painless and peaceful.

Mel Gibson's film 'The Passion of the Christ' met with varying reactions when it was first released. Some felt the film anti-Semitic, others saw it as overtly brutal and some felt the use of Aramaic and Latin tedious. I cannot over emphasise the focus on the suffering of Jesus. This is a very hard film to watch, let no one be misguided on this account. I also found the film incredibly moving and painful and possibly for the first time realised the extent of Jesus' suffering and sacrifice.

I have thought long and hard about inviting anyone to a showing of 'the Passion of the Christ' simply I suppose because I did not wish anyone to be upset. However, I am not a censor and I propose to show the video at the Rectory on Wednesday, March 23 rd at 7 p.m. As I can only seat twelve people it will be a case of 'first come, first served'. To book please telephone me on 849048. I wish again to emphasis that the scenes of violence are very explicit. This film is rated 18. Like me some of you may realize through watching this film the cost the God incarnate paid on our behalf.

Rosaleen and I would like to wish you all a very Happy Easter.

Michael
