Open house to offer help

Parishioners in South Zeal continue to rally to the support of those that lost their loved ones, homes and livelihood in the tsunami disaster. Wendy Redstone will be opening her home on Saturday, 12 th February from 10.30a.m until 12 noon and welcoming visitors to a coffee morning. Wendy knew she had to do something for the people whose suffering she could feel when seeing their plight on TV, projected into the safe and secure west Devon village where she lives. At ‘Moorlands,' her home in Ramsley, South Zeal, visitors will find a range of stalls awaiting their arrival, including ‘bring and buy' so others can participate on the day, and with a cake stall and a raffle adding to that opportunity it will be a coffee morning not to miss. Anyone that might to donate items or would like more information can contact Wendy on 01837 840205.

Make time for murder

The opportunity has arisen for people in West Devon to participate in some armchair sleuthing in the company of the Belstone Players whose members will be attempting to solve the mystery of the murder in Brandling Hall when they tackle ‘Dame Agatha's Greatest Case'. In the comfort of Belstone Village Hall on Friday and Saturday, 18th and 19 th January, from 7.30p.m. the players will transport their visitors to a jolly weekend party at Brandling Hall to expose the dark secrets of guests there and uncover wicked plans that are afoot. How will Inspector Corner, of the Yard, manage this unruly bunch of upper class blue-blooded Brits and social climbers and why is Humphrey Yewtern, the prominent politician, talking to Ronnie Bigg and Barry the Hatchet, members of the criminal underworld? When murder occurs, can Dame Agatha Crustie, world-famous amateur sleuth, really be the only one able to solve this case? To find the answers and see the super sleuth in action, just call Marion and Chris Walpole on 01837 840498 and confess to not yet having a ticket.

Meet the refuse and recycling man

Various rumours having been circulating around the Cheriton Bishop area about changes in the refuse and recycling collection service and Mid Devon District Council has responded to the Parish Council's request that the District Council should clarify their proposals. Accordingly, Mr Gary Pilling, the Cleansing and Transport Manager for Mid Devon, will be attending the Parish Council meeting at The Methodist Church at 7.30 p.m. on Monday 14th February, to explain the proposals and to answer questions. As always, meetings are open to all, and if anyone has any query on refuse or recycling collections, this will be their opportunity to ask for answers. The parish Council recognise this is unusual for parishioners to be able to meet the man in charge and is encouraging parishioners not miss the opportunity.

Acorn Community Support

The first piece of good news from Acorn Community Support is that the amount raised by the Christmas Fayre £120 and the second is that the money to buy the community bus has now been raised. The vehicle and the conversion, which will include side step and rear wheelchair lift, should be available in about 3 months. Thanks go to all who contributed in any way towards the purchase of the bus particularly Doctor Jason Clunie who initially launched the fund raising with a magnificent marathon run with sponsorship of over £l1, 000. During the year there will be Acorn coffee mornings held in Cheriton Bishop and the next Acorn Lunch is on Wednesday 16th February at 1.00p.m. in the Village Hall. Anyone still wishing to enjoy that one should please call Diane Hanson on 01647 24179 before Monday, 14 th February.
