Safari Supper

What a great night it was! Congratulations to the hosts on entering into the spirit of the evening so wholeheartedly, considering it was a new experience for many of them! If there were a prize for the most innovative setting it would go to Ann and Ken Crawford. They hosted a main course in their green house, suitably heated and lit with fairy lights! The evening began with an aperitif in Church House. Starter, main course and dessert were enjoyed in three different houses and all returned to Church House for coffee and a raffle. The evening was a gastronomic delight for me. I enjoyed both choices of fish chowder and mozzarella and tomato salad for starters. For main course I was served autumn vegetable pasta bake, while the carnivores enjoyed a lamb lasagne and salads. Puddings were a treat and included upside down apple and walnut sponge, profiteroles and pears poached in mulled wine. Speaking of wine.that was flowing too! While we were all enjoying coffee I overheard the following comments." I cleaned the whole house and no-one even used the toilet!", " It was great.I've never had the Canns or Baileys in my house before", "It was lovely to have time to get to know people you only see in passing". This is set to become an annual event along with the Belstone and Sticklepath Safari Suppers. The proceeds of the evening (£335) went to the proposed refurbishment of the refreshments area in the Church of St. Andrew , South Tawton .

WARNING!

A special warning to all those visiting the rectory! The entrance is dangerously placed on a blind corner. The road is narrow and while being inside the 30 mph speed limit zone not everyone seems to realise the need to slow down! Please take great care as you approach the gate. By the way there is a new latch on the gate, which is much more user friendly than the previous one. Apologies to those who have had to climb the gate to get in and to Mrs. Neill who following futile attempts to open the gate, went home and telephoned me to say she had been round! We love to have visitors.honest!

New job

I knew it was time to look for a paid post (as opposed to the unpaid post of PA to the Rector) when Michael started mumbling about selling our few 'antiques' so that we could afford a holiday! I'm now working part time post as a Child Care officer with the West of England School for young people with little or no sight ( Exeter ). I heard about the vacancy on the local grapevine (thanks Ursula). I work with a group of 16 - 19 year olds who really enjoy the programme of activities on offer on and off site including stock car racing, visits to restaurants, adventure centres, arts and crafts, boating, shopping and so on. The work is demanding but very rewarding and lots of fun. There are now three of us from these villages working there! Care to join us? Vacancies arise from time to time for those with childcare / nursing / classroom assistant experience (Tel: 01392 454200).

Autumn Fayre

Having revived the tradition of the Autumn Church Fayre last year, Michael Thayer is expecting another bumper turn out this year on Saturday 6 th November. The Fayre takes place in Victory Hall, South Zeal from 2-4 p.m. Why not pop along to the Craft Fair in Belstone before lunch and then come on down to Victory Hall for a snack and bargains galore? There will be various stalls (crafts, bric-a-brac, produce, fancy goods etc) raffle, games and refreshments. Who knows you might make a real find among the bric-a-brac fit for Bargain hunt!" Michael will be running a special stall of hats and ties. This is an opportunity to find something to wear to Ascot or just the hat you needed for the annual pantomime! Remember ladies; silk neckties make wonderful patchwork items!

Social Whirl

The 7 Stars opened (quietly) on Thursday night

There are only photos of coffee time as I  was snapping away in the home of my first host only to discover I had no film in the camera (felt very silly)!

Our 'new' car (someone called it the yellow peril!)
