If anyone happens to read this, PLEASE BE AWARE that the site is NOT LIVE yet but is undergoing various tests and build trials. I am on the Starters package with 1&1. It is cheap but it appears very SLOW and UNRELIABLE. It takes about 5 minutes to navigate to the Edit page and then often will not allow you to Publish you results when you have finished. Also help is only available weekdays and not bank holidays. I sent a e-mail on 1/5/03 and recieved reply (which was not even helpful, and part in German) at 13.00 on 6/5/03. They then always put on the end of their e-mails "how was our service?"

I am now going to try and Publish this on the server - wish me luck!

I am back again. It didn't work once more! One day I'll get there but whether with this Web Site Host or another, who knows!

The aim of this site is to let you see what a lovely part of the world this is and maybe to encourage you to see for yourself.

Have a little walk around our village.

The route starts and finishes at the car park in South Zeal, But because this is a circular walk, it is possible to start anywhere, The car park at the Finch Foundry in Sticklepath, or the Rising Sun Inn, South Zeal are also good places to leave the car. Be warned that in wet weather some of the paths can be very muddy.

South Zeal Car Park
Leave the car park the way you drove in and turn right along Ramsley Lane At the fork in the road, keep left.
Dry Bridge The road above you was the turnpike built to bypass South Zeal in the early 19C. On your left immediately after the bridge you can see spoil heaps from the Ramsley copper mine. This productive mine was worked from 1861-1880 and again from 1901-1909. The flat, even slope from the top of the tip is the line of a tramway which brought trucks of ore down to the dressing floors, where power was provided by a 35-foot diameter waterwheel. The remains of the wheel pit are in the field on your right. Notice that there is no vegetation on the spoil; this is because of its high arsenic content. At the T-junction turn right and walk along the road. You may be lucky enough to see a heron fishing the stream in the valley on your right. After about 50m take the track on the left which zigzags  up the spoil heaps. After a brief climb, follow the track as it bears left and you will come to a  viewing platform with green railings, On a good day you can see Exmoor away to the North and the line of the new A30 which has brought peace to this comer of Dartmoor. You can also pick out three of the villages you will pass through on this walk. South Zeal is spread out below and the tower of South Tawton church is prominent in the middle distance. To the West you may be able to make our the White Rock, a well known Sticklepath landmark.

So far only this page, Dartmoor and Alezanes Diary page are built!
